


He had a great sense of humor and a many funny sayings. Johnny loved life and lived his to the fullest. If you were visiting him at home, you were watching Fox News or a classic Western as these were two of his favorites. He had a strong opinion about current events and the state-of-affairs of the country, and he wasn’t’ afraid to express his opinions. Johnny was a stanch Republican and serious about politics. In his later years, Johnny loved to travel to Florida to spend time on the beach. As well, he was a beekeeper and talented dog trainer. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, and fishing in his spare time. As a young man, Johnny was a true outdoorsman. In 1973 Johnny started began working for the Barbourville Police Department as a dispatcher eventually working his way up to Chief of Police before retiring in 2004. In addition to serving his country, Johnny served his community. For his dedicated and brave service, he was awarded several medals including the Purple Heart, Army Commendation Metals 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He served in US Army Companies B 4th Battalion, 54th Infantry. He attended Union College for a couple of years after returning from Vietnam. Johnny served in the US Army with a tour in Vietnam starting in April of 1969 to 1971 and later finished out his service in 1975. He graduated from Knox Central High School and went into the US Army leaving his Appalachian home behind. Johnny was the son of Ed Smith and Margaret Louise Smith born to them on March 23, 1950, in Knox County, Kentucky.ĭuring his teenage years, Johnny became a member of CallihanChurch. – Johnny Edward Smith, 72, formerly of the Tuttle Community in Knox County, and of London Kentucky and Navarre, Florida, passed away September 13, 2022.
